Place 4 College Station City Council incumbent Lynn McIlhaney has spent nearly twice as much money campaigning against her opponent -- political newcomer Katy-Marie Lyles, according to the latest finance reports filed a week before the runoff election.
McIlhaney, a homemaker and current mayor pro-tem, collected $1,000 from eight major donors between May 2 and June 3. She has spent $3,499 during the entire race.
Lyles, director of College Ministries at A&M United Methodist Church, received major contributions from six people totaling $1,700 during the latest reporting period, which ended Friday, and has spent $1,820 since the filing for the seat.
McIlhaney still had $790 in her campaign account, while Lyles had $119 as of Friday.
Lyles said the bulk of her donations came from close friends and people who approached her, including $500 from Chuck Ellison, a lawyer who represented Weingarten Realty Investors during a controversial vote before the City Council over the use of 53 acres owned by a developer at Rock Prairie Road and Earl Rudder Freeway.
McIlhaney said she didn't seek out contributions, but received them from people who contacted her and wanted to donate. Seven of her eight donors were either doctors or professors living in the area. Bryan businessman John Duncum donated $100.
Both sides said they didn't expect the financial aspects of the campaign to affect the final outcome.
Tuesday is the last day of early voting before election day, which is Saturday.
Neither McIlhaney nor Lyles received enough votes in the May 9 election to win a required majority to take office. McIlhaney picked up 1,480 votes, 49 percent of the total, and Lyles received
1,304 votes, 43 percent.
City Secretary Connie Hooks said she expected the early voting totals to surpass 1,000 by the end of the day Tuesday.
