Today could possibly be the last day of the Democratic primary campaign, and after one of the closest and most historical primaries in history it is apparent that Senator Barack Obama will be the Democratic nominee for President.
The Clinton campaign seems to be preparing for the end. Senator Clinton’s husband former President Bill Clinton was quoted as saying that this “this may be the last day I'm ever involved in a campaign of this kind.” There have also been reports of the Clinton campaign staff is preparing for the ending of the campaign. Senator Clinton’s post primary speech will be given Tuesday night in New York City, and it should be interesting to observe if she gives any concessions in her home state.
The challenge for Democrats now becomes to unite as a party. In the last several months the Democratic Party has become deeply divided between Senator Clinton supporters and Senator Obama supporters. This divide has been apparent among campaign surrogates, on the political blogs, and among the party delegates.
During both the percent caucus and the county caucus there was an obvious growing divide between the supporters. It should be interesting at the state convention to observe the atmosphere of the delegates. Will the delegates committed to Clinton continue to argue for their candidate and advocate that the nomination process should be taken to convention? Will the delegates committed to Obama reach out to the delegates committed to Clinton and make an effort to be diplomatic and unify the party?
The truth is once the dust settles on Tuesday night the majority of supporters will begin to focus on the general election and embrace the democratic nominee. The majority of Clinton supporters will support Obama in the general election, and I suspect that the majority of Clinton supporters that have threatened not to support Obama in the general election will quietly vote for Obama.
Hopefully, this will mark the end of the Democratic Party focusing on what divides us, and the beginning of the Democratic Party focusing on what units us.
Later this week…
I will be attending the Texas Democratic State Convention, and I will be chronicling my experience at the convention.
